Evolution of the Horror Movie Poster Design: 1922 – 2009

  • Posted : December 14th, 2009

“From the dreadful art work created for Nosferatu in 1922 till the present, horror movie posters has evolved with time, immensely. Having celebrated the twisted, the sick, the ghastly, the disgusting and the terrifying, this genre of art is highly evocative. It may be just another creepy photograph conveying malicious promises, or an abstract interpretations rendered by an elaborate painting, designers are experimenting with their creative juices from time immemorial to bring out the ghastly effect in their posters.”

ZOMBIES ON ICE 2! December 19 at McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink in Millennium Park, Chicago

From Kitty Zombie:

Alrighty folks! It’s a late start, but we are still going to be hitting the ice this year from 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm on December 19th, McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink Millennium Park

We got GREAT reviews last year, people said we were better behaved than the Santas that come around. AWESOME! So lets keep it up! No dripping gore or blood please, and be friendly. This is a celebration of holidays and weirdness, so lets have fun with it!

There is no Bears game that day, so parking shouldn’t be all that bad. Since Zombies on Ice is on a Saturday this year, for anyone that would like to hit the Christkindlmarket afterward, we may shamble on over for some yummy warm drinks.

And for those of you over 21, we may just end up hitting a bar or two that evening.

So dress festive, bring some skates so you don’t have to rent them, and lets have some silly fun!

Visit the FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE.

ZOMBIES ON ICE 1, 2008

At least 187 zombies turned out at the McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink Millennium Park on Sunday, December 14, 2008 to join Kitty Zombie for the first ever Chicago Zombies On Ice.

The skating zombies were met by a surprising amount of press coverage (read the Chicago Sun-Times Article), with articles that ran in the local newspapers, radio and TV, not to mention tons of photos and video for the internet.

Everybody had a great time and, more importantly, all the zombies behaved themselves, creating further goodwill in Chicago for zombie flash mobs (unlike those unruly drunk Santas that hit the ice rink the night before!)

Holiday of Horrors | Presented by Horror Society

Holiday of Horrors

The Horror Society is going to give you a Christmas Present this year! On December 12th they will be back at the Portage theater once again with a great lineup of films for your Christmas Horror Season. Come dressed as Santa and get in for only $10. They will have plenty of vendors on hand for your Christmas shopping. Get your horror freak a great gift this year!

They will have giveaways, photo op with their Evil Santa, plenty of booze on hand…. maybe even some Egg Nog as well. Check out the lineup below….

CHRISTMAS EVIL

Released in 1980 and once again we have an unstable main character who puts on the red suit and beard and gives the naughty what they deserve-and we’re not talking about lumps of coal. Arguably the best of the “Christmas Killer” movies, Christmas Evil should not be missed. This rare screening features a 35mm print from the personal collection of the film’s director.

“The greatest Christmas movie ever made.” – John Waters (PINK FLAMINGOS, HAIRSPRAY)

Dir. Lewis Jackson / USA / 1980 / 35mm / 100 min. / Color

DIRECTOR LEWIS JACKSON WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE TO INTRODUCE THE FILM, SIGN DVDS AND SCREEN RARE OUTTAKES!!

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT

Caused a firestorm of controversy upon its release in 1984. The plot concerns a deranged young man who dresses as Santa one Christmas Eve and punishes “naughty” individuals, including the obligatory group of promiscuous teens. Although the film is no more sleazy than the dozens of other slashers prevalent in the early ’80s, Silent Night, Deadly Night outraged many who felt the demonizing of a beloved childhood icon was just going too far. Critics lambasted the movie while protesters showed up at local movie theaters to express their disgust. As a result of the controversy, Silent Night, Deadly Night was pulled from theaters, an act which essentially marked the death knell of the slasher film. Which, in retrospect, maybe wasn’t such a bad thing.

Dir. Charles Sellier Jr. / USA / 1984 / 35mm / 79 min. / Color

NEW YEARS EVIL

New Year’s Eve is on it’s way and TV’s most famous punk-rock lady icon Diane Sullivan is holding a late hour countdown celebration of music and partying. All is going well until Diane recieves a phone call from a odd sounding stranger announcing on live Television that when New Year’s strikes in each time zone, a ‘Naughty Girl’ will be murdered (punished), and the killer leaves a threat saying she will be the one to die last. The studio crew takes precautions and heighten security, but on the other side of America, a hospital nurse is found brutally butchered. Who could be behind these murders? A crazed fan, a religious psychotic, or perhaps it’s someone much closer to Diane then the police (or audience) could have ever expected.

Dir. Emmett Alston / USA / 1980 / DVD / 90 min. / Color

BLACK SANTA’S REVENGE

Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, The Devil’s Rejects, From Beyond) stars in this epic short film based on the popular comic book story that appeared in the pages of BadAzz MoFo magazine.

Written, produced and directed by BadAzz MoFo creator David Walker, BLACK SANTA’S REVENGE is a two-fisted tale of yuletide vengeance reminiscent of the classic blaxploitation and revenge films of the 1970s and 80s—think William Lustig’s Vigilante meets Ivan Dixon’s Trouble Man. Adapted from the short comic book story drawn by Rusty Beach and written by Walker, the film version of BSR is filled with all the classic elements of exploitation cinema—graphic violence, gratuitous nudity, and tons of profanity—all crammed into a 20-minute running time.

Dir. David F. Walker / USA / 2007 / DVD / 20 min. / Color
