The Menagerie by DEATH BY DESIGN, CO.-Fundraiser for the International Museum of Surgical Science
Saturday June 12, 2010 from 7-11pm
The Menagerie
by Death by Design,Co.
International Museum of Surgical Science
1524 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Chicago, IL 60610
Celebrate at the bestial benefit devised by the creative directors of Death by Design, Co., in collaboration with the Museum of Surgical Science. Truly a fundraiser like no other, The Menagerie will take partygoers to a vaudevillian world of half-human hybrids anatomically altered at the hand of the infamous Doctor Moreau. Golden horns sparkle on the heads of the ringleaders as they bound into the crowd announcing the entertainment acts lined up for this summer soiree.
Enter the mansion and join the estranged experiments Moreau’s meddling left behind. On stage the Scarring Party is mashing up quaint sonic antiquities with modern macabre sneer. Legs of lions, fins of fishes, claws of birds reach from human torsos clasping to applaud the dancing ladies of Cabaret Manimalistique frolicking in the Hall of Immortals. Smoke and mirrors provided by the famous illusionist Thomas the Geek Magician. Gasp at the sideshow mischief of Sanjula Vamana as he performs acts never before seen by half-human eyes. Hidden evidence left by the insane doctor must be discovered if Menagerie guests intend to escape the evening’s House of Pain. Succumb to the whispers of the fortune teller and you may find yourself posing for a photograph trapped behind the bars of the iron maiden.
VIP tickets allow special access to experience the party early and enjoy feasting on smaller beasts with your goblet of wine in hand. Special events and entertainment will fill this exclusive hour of debauchery!
Death by Design, Co., is a special effects and video-based company established by artists Michelle Maynard and Teena McClelland in May 2005. The Death by Design team constructs film sets and immersive environments at select locations where clients are invited to enter the set and engage in an in-depth conversation with life through their own “Hollywood” death. Visitors can either watch the action unfold or be part of the story-line, infiltrating the artwork as live (and dead) bodies.

Campaign for Real Fear Writing Contest
Christopher Fowler and Maura McHugh are looking for more diverse work in the horror genre which reflects characters and themes of 21st century life.
Wanted: Dark, challenging fiction in 500-word stories that are well-written, original and previously unpublished. Write a story you’d like to read or write about something you think isn’t depicted in horror often. Keep it contemporary. Care about your characters and subject.
“It’s important to stress that while this movement began from the glaring omission of women from the horror genre, the Campaign for Real Fear wants diversity in themes, characters and monsters. It’s time to promote a twenty-first century horror sensibility, one that explores what scares us most in our rapidly changing world.”
“If you want change, you better write it.”
The top ten stories will be published in British horror magazine Black Static and podcast as an audio book by Action Audio.
The deadline is 5pm GMT, on Friday the 16th of April. One story per person.
