AN IMMORTAL MORALITY TALE IS REINVENTED FOR A NEW GENERATION AT THE PUBLIC HOUSE THEATRE
Adapted by Sharai Bohannon and Sophie Duntley
Directed by Sophie Duntley

Chicago, IL (September 13th, 2017) – The year is 1933. The Great Depression has plunged many into darkness and poverty. But not the Fausts. The patriarch of the Faust family has just died, and instead of leaving his lucrative business and assets to his oldest, most capable daughter, he has transferred everything to his younger, inept son. Enraged by the injustice, and ready to save the family business, Lady Faust takes matters into her own hands, the way her father did, and many Fausts before him. She makes a pact with Lucifer, to make women equal to men in public and private affairs. With her signature etched in her arm, Lady Faust has one year to control the company and persuade the powers that be to elevate women to a higher status. If she fails, her soul belongs to Lucifer.

About Lady Faust:  Since working together for The Public House Theatre’s “Bye Bye Liver” and “The Vagina Monologues,” Sophie Duntley and Sharai Bohannon have shared a vision: An adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s “Dr. Faustus,” with females in the driver’s seat. Inspired by Vancouver’s recent, depression-era “Gastown,” Duntley and Bohannon got to work updating Marlowe’s work (preserving the verse), with a message that rings as chillingly in our Post-Election era as it would at the time of the Depression: How much must women sacrifice to prove their worth to a society that fears change?

“Lady Faust” is a bewitching struggle between good and evil, delivered right on time for Halloween season.

Sharai Bohannon’s “Craigslisted” has been produced across the country. When she’s not writing, she can be found running tech for various shows at The Public House Theatre.

Sophie Duntley made her directorial debut with Theresa Rebeck’s “Loose Knit” at The Public House Theatre, and frequently takes the stage in TPHT’s flagship show, “Bye Bye Liver.”

The cast includes: Bradley Bankemper, Torey Byrne, Kayla Cole, Zach Hebert, Whitman Johnson, Haley Keeley, Heather Smith

THE PUBLIC HOUSE THEATRE: The friendliest theatre in Chicago invites you to enjoy a show or two that “puts the efforts of Saturday Night Live to shame (Chicago SunTimes),” where “The modus operandi seems to be coming up with the sort of ideas that seem brilliant when you’re smashed at 2 a.m. and then…actually making them work (The Examiner).” If you’re thirsty, take advantage of the excellent drink deals at the full bar, especially if you’re a fine whiskey or craft beer lover. With any show on any night of the week, it’s “impossible to not have a good time (TimeOut Chicago).” ThePubTheatre.com
