7th Annual Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival and Haunted Theatre Journey
Have you seen the female spirit in the Genesee Theatre woman’s bathroom? Or maybe you heard the ghost dog barking one evening during a performance? If you have ever wondered what scary things lurk in the basement of the Genesee Theatre, now is your chance. On Oct. 26, the Waukegan Public Library will offer free haunted expeditions through the innards of Waukegan’s historic and beautiful theatre with the purchase of a ticket to the Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival. Tours run every three minutes starting at 6 p.m. until 7:15 p.m., ending right before the performance begins.
“The storytellers are really good at making your heart beat faster with a variety of scary stories, but we wanted to add a new creepy factor to the festival this year. Walking through the dark and spooky places of the Genesee Theatre will really set the tone for the evening. I think Ray Bradbury would have approved,” said Richard Lee, Executive Director of the Waukegan Public Library.
The one-night only haunted house will travel down rarely used stairs at the back of the Theatre, wind through the dark work areas of the basement, pass under the pit and end up on the stage itself. Seldom seen Genesee Theatre historic items, including the former light board, will be on display. The haunted house is not recommended for people who are pregnant or have heart conditions.
This is the seventh year for the award-winning Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival, hosted by the Waukegan Public Library. This year’s theme, “October Country,” celebrates Bradbury’s favorite time of year with the colorful, penetrating, and spooky characters and stories from Bradbury’s imagination. All guests are welcome to dress in costume as their favorite Bradbury character.
Tickets for both the haunted house and performance are $17 and are on sale at the Genesee box office, www.ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000 when you purchase your ticket before Oct. 26. The haunted house is an additional $5 if you purchase your ticket the day of the performance. Library patrons can present any library card and receive $1 off at the box office.
